Tip 1: Saving on Transportation

Fuel costs of all types are rising at incredible rates. In just the last 4 years, gas prices have almost doubled, and desiel fuel costs are rising even more quickly. We've become a world that is hooked on oil and prices are likely to only increase over time.

But don't lose hope. Saving money on transportation is very simple. Here's some great tips to help you save:

  • Take public transportation or carpool. In many larger cities, public transportation is catching on with many non-traditional users. When you factor in the cost of fuel, maintenance, depreciation, insurance, taxes and parking fees, the cost of a rider fare really begins to look like a bargain. There are, admittedly, some trade-offs, as there is a certain freedom to driving your own vehicle, but the cost of doing so makes transportation by trains, subways and buses worth the lost convenience of our automobiles.
  • Maintain your vehicle. Simple, Right? If that's so, then why are millions of vehicles overdue for oil changes as you read these words? A regular oil change using your vehicle manufacturer's maintenance invervals can save your engine from needless extra work and waisting of fuel. A well lubricated engine uses less gas and significantly reduces wear and tear, which can save you a great deal of money over the life of your vehicle. Also: Check you tire pressure weekly and keep your tires at your vehicle manufacturer's suggested pressure. The tire pressure suggestion can usually be found in the well of your driver door.
  • Drive slower! Your Grandpa might have been on to something here. One of the biggest potential wastes of money with any vehicle comes in how they are driven. Your vehicle (except for some hybrid vehicles) is usually most efficient at about 55 to 65 MPH. At these speeds, your vehicle is usually using its highest gear and the least amount of fuel per mile. Drag (the displacement of air) is also relatively low even at these speeds. As speed increases over about 65 mph, drag increases almost exponentially and the amount of fuel needed to maintain those higher speeds greatly decreases the fuel needed per mile. Also: Driving slowly up to your desired speed will use less gas than quick starts and 0-60 runs.
  • Use cruise control. Cruise control is designed to keep you car at a consistent speed during your travel. Varying speeds often wastes fuel, and a little wasted fuel can cost big money even over one car trip.
